A Shaiva temple on the Bay of Bengal shore at Thiruvanmiyur, whose masonry structure dates to the 9th-century Cholas with later Vijayanagara expansion; inscriptions of Rajendra Chola record 11th-century endowments. Shiva is worshipped here as Marundeeswarar, lord of medicines.
Shiva is said to have taught the sage Agastya the healing properties of herbs at this spot, and Valmiki is held to have worshipped here, giving the place its old name Thiruvalmikiyur.
