A Shiva temple in the Kaveri delta whose present masonry structure was raised by the Cholas in the 9th century and enlarged by the Thanjavur Nayaks; it is one of the ashta-virattanam shrines marking Shiva's heroic deeds.

Shiva is said to have manifested here as Veerateeswarar to destroy the demon Jalandhara, who had been born of the fire of Shiva's third eye cast into the ocean.
