One of the eight Ashta Veeratta sthalams marking Shiva's heroic deeds - here the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice - built by the 9th-century Cholas and expanded by the Thanjavur Nayaks. It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam of the Tevaram canon.
Shiva is said to have destroyed Daksha for insulting Dakshayani at his sacrifice, then restored him to life with a goat's head.
